Reservoir Engineering - What is it?
It is concerned with reserves below the ground at depths of several kilometres.
The hydrocarbon accumulations (oil & gas) are mapped in 3D, as well as the characteristics of the fluid and rocks (types of fluids, porosity, permeability, gross & net thicknesses, etc).
The amount of oil, water and gas is then calculated; as well as the Reserves (ie. how much can be produced), which are often expressed in the form of forecasts
A mathematical model is usually built optimising these reserves. Some of the development options may be:
- different well locations and/or numbers
- different size of production facilities
- water or gas injection
- cash flow analyses
